Digitization to Digital Transformation (Dx)

Summary

UT Health Science Center is moving from paper-based processes toward full digital transformation (Dx). This article explains the three stages of this journey—digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation—and highlights how tools like OneDrive and SharePoint support this transition.

Instructions

Microsoft provides UTHSC with cloud-based tools that support the shift from paper to digital workflows:

  • OneDrive for personal file storage.
  • SharePoint for shared document storage and collaboration.

SharePoint provides a secure, centralized location for storing electronic documents.

Dx Definitions

Step 1: Digitization is the process of converting analog or physical items (such as paper records, in-person lectures, physical models, or ID cards) into digital form.

Step 2: Digitalization is the use of digital technologies to improve individual institutional operations such as admissions, course registration, research administration, payroll, and procurement.

Step 3: Digital Transformation (Dx) is a coordinated shift in culture, workforce, and technology that enables new educational and operational models and transforms an institution’s strategic direction and value.
