Supported Microsoft Windows and Apple Operating System Versions

Summary

UT Health Science Center–owned computing devices are required to run a supported operating system per IT0102-HSC-B Device Life Cycle Security policy. Devices that cannot update will be blocked and should be replaced or properly disposed of. Exemptions may be requested when justified.

Prerequisites

  • Device is UTHSC-owned.
  • Device is capable of updating to a supported operating system (if it is to remain on UTHSC networks).
  • User has access to TechConnect to submit service or exemption requests.

Device Replacement and Disposal

  • Obsolete devices should be replaced in the interests of security, support, and productivity.
  • Use the Surplus Computing Equipment Form to properly dispose of old computers.
  • To request a new computing device recommendation and/or assistance with the computing device replacement process, submit a Request a Computer Purchase Consultation ticket or contact the Service Desk at 901.448.2222.

Requesting an Exemption

If you think you have a valid reason to request an exemption from the University of Tennessee security policy that requires all UT Health Science Center computing devices to use a supported operating system, please submit an exemption request.

Troubleshooting

  • Device is blocked from UTHSC wired or wireless networks:
    • Verify whether the operating system version is listed as supported above.
    • Attempt to update the operating system to a supported version, if possible.
    • If the device cannot be updated, begin the replacement process or submit an exemption request if you believe there is a valid reason.
  • Cannot print while connected to Eduroam:
    • This is expected behavior; devices on Eduroam cannot print to UT Network Printers.
    • Use a supported device connected to the UTHSC network to print.

Additional Notes

  • Maintaining supported operating systems is critical for security, compliance, and reliable support.
  • Unsupported or obsolete devices may lose access to UTHSC networks without prior notice.
  • Replacing obsolete devices improves compatibility with UTHSC systems and services.
