Remote Desktop: Windows Setup

  1. On the computer that you want to remote to, in the search bar on the bottom left, search for Remote Settings.
  2. In the search results, click Remote Desktop Settings.

  3. Remote Desktop window will appear.
  4. Turn on Enable Remote Desktop.
  5. Check Keep my PC awake for connections when it is plugged in.
  6. Check Make my PC discoverable.

  7. In the search bar on the bottom left, search for Computer Name.
  8. In the search results, click View your PC name. An About windows appears.
  9. Under Device Specifications look for Device Name.
  10. Write down the Device Name, as you will need it later.

  11. On the computer that you want to remote from, do the following:
    1. In the search bar on the bottom left, search for Remote Desktop Connection.
    2. In the search results, click Remote Desktop Connection. Remote Desktop Connection window will appear.
    3. Click the button next to Show Options on the bottom left of the window.
    4. In the Computer field, type your Device Name from your desktop computer.
    5. In the User name field type UTHSC\Your NetID.
    6. Finally, click Save As, name it, and save it on the desktop.

  12. Note the following:
    1. You must be on campus OR connected to VPN to use the Remote Desktop feature to connect to your work computer.
    2. The first time you connect to your work PC remotely, you will get a warning window. (See below.) Check the box next to Don’t ask me again for connections to this computer and click the Yes button.
