Remote Desktop: Windows Setup

Summary

This article explains how to configure a Windows computer for Remote Desktop access and how to connect to it from another Windows device. It also includes important requirements for using Remote Desktop from off campus.

Prerequisites

  • UT NetID and password
  • Windows computer you want to connect to (work computer)
  • Windows computer you want to connect from (home or secondary computer)
  • VPN connection if you are off campus

Instructions

Prepare the Computer You Want to Connect To

  1. Open the Windows search bar and search for Remote Settings.
  2. Select Remote Desktop Settings.
  3. In the Remote Desktop window, turn on Enable Remote Desktop.
  4. Enable Keep my PC awake for connections when it is plugged in.
  5. Enable Make my PC discoverable.
  6. Open the Windows search bar again and search for Computer Name.
  7. Select View your PC name.
  8. In the Device Specifications section, locate the Device Name.
  9. Write down the Device Name; you will use it when connecting remotely.

Connect From Another Windows Computer

  1. Open the Windows search bar and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Select Remote Desktop Connection to open the application.
  3. Select the button next to Show Options.
  4. In the Computer field, enter the Device Name from your work computer.
  5. In the User name field, enter UTHSC\YourNetID.
  6. Select Save As, name the connection file, and save it to your desktop for easy access.

Important Requirements

  • You must be on campus or connected to the UTHSC VPN to use Remote Desktop.
  • The first time you connect, Windows may display a security warning. Select the option to trust the connection and continue.

Troubleshooting

  • Verify that Remote Desktop is enabled on the computer you are connecting to.
  • Ensure you are using the correct Device Name.
  • Confirm that you are connected to VPN if you are off campus.
  • Restart both computers if the connection fails unexpectedly.

Additional Notes

  • Remote Desktop requires the target computer to remain powered on and connected to the network.
  • Saving a Remote Desktop shortcut makes future connections faster and more consistent.
