Endpoints Minimum Hardware & Refresh Recommendations

Summary

UTHSC ITS minimum hardware requirements for new computer purchases and recommended hardware lifecycle.

Body

New computers purchased with UTHSC funds should meet the following minimum hardware requirements:

  • 16GB Memory
  • 500GB SSD storage(HDD should never be used as primary storage)
  • TPM 2.0 Security Chip (PC only)
  • Three years of extended warranty coverage is recommended. (i.e., Dell ProSupport, AppleCare)
  • OS versions:
    • For PC: Windows 11 Pro (latest version).  Windows Home Edition is not compatible with campus systems or eligible for upgrade to the Enterprise license during configuration by ITS.
    • For Mac: Latest version of macOS.  Unsupported versions will not be allowed on UTHSC's network and may be incompatible with campus apps.
  • New Dell computers should be selected from the business lineup: OptiPlex, Precision, Latitude.  The Inspiron and most XPS models are considered consumer devices and should be avoided.
  • New displays should be ordered with new PCs unless a monitor that supports DisplayPort or HDMI is already owned.  Older monitors that use the deprecated DVI and VGA display inputs can cause resolution issues when used with new PCs.  (See reference photos below)

UTHSC’s preferred vendors are Dell, Apple and Microsoft. UTHSC has agreements in place for the procurement and in-house support of Dell & Apple devices and has also vetted them for compliance with security and configuration requirements. Other vendors’ products may not be compatible with UTHSC’s systems, and some, such as Lenovo, are currently not allowed due to security concerns.  Please submit a Security Exemption request prior to purchasing devices from vendors other than Dell, Apple and Microsoft.

All new computer purchases should be ordered from the HSC Hub. The Hub is familiar with these minimum hardware requirements and will coordinate delivering new purchases to ITS for needed configuration prior to use.

Endpoints Refresh Cycle Recommendations

ITS recommends refreshing endpoints every five years. Most laptops and desktops are ordered with the recommended three-year extended coverage from the manufacturer.  After this coverage expires, needed repair parts will have a cost associated with them that must be paid by the department that owns the device. PC and Mac devices over five years old will receive reduced hardware and software support and face an increased risk of irrecoverable failure. After five years, devices face reduced availability of OEM replacement parts and reduced compatibility with needed software and OS updates.
